Supabase vs Firebase for a First Mobile App

How Supabase and Firebase compare for accounts, databases and pricing in a first mobile app, and which suits which project.

Which is better for a first app, Supabase or Firebase?

Both are good. Choose Supabase if you like tables and SQL (it is built on Postgres), want row-level access rules and open-source tooling. Choose Firebase if you prefer a document database, deep Google integration and built-in tools like Crashlytics and Cloud Messaging. For most first apps, either handles accounts, data and files well.

The database choice should match your records, access rules and operating needs.

How to choose

  • Data with clear relationships (orders, users, products): Supabase's tables fit naturally.
  • Real-time, flexible documents and heavy use of other Google services: Firebase fits.
  • Whichever you choose, set access rules before launch and test with two accounts.

Firebase is more than one database

Firestore is a common Firebase database, but Firebase also offers other data products, including relational options through Data Connect. Comparing 'Supabase tables versus Firebase documents' is useful only when you mean Supabase Postgres and Cloud Firestore specifically.

Choose the actual products the app needs: authentication, database, files, server functions and diagnostics. You do not have to use every service offered by either company.

Model one real task in both

For a class-booking app, consider members, classes and reservations. A relational model can express those relationships directly. A document model may organize information around the reads the interface needs and may duplicate selected fields intentionally.

Neither choice removes the need to protect booking capacity or enforce ownership. Decide where the trusted booking operation runs and how simultaneous requests are handled.

Permissions need their own trial

Create two accounts with private records. Check reading, creating, editing and deleting. With Supabase, database grants and row-level policies work together. With Firestore, security rules govern supported client access; privileged server access needs separate care.

A hidden button is not a permission rule. Test requests and data access, not only which controls appear in the interface.

Compare offline requirements precisely

Supported Firestore SDKs provide offline behavior, with details depending on the platform and client. A React Native app using one SDK can behave differently from another using a web SDK.

Supabase provides Postgres and realtime capabilities, but you need a deliberate plan for local persistence, queued writes and conflict resolution if the app must work offline. 'Realtime' and 'offline sync' describe different needs.

Estimate the bill from the workload

Count likely reads, writes, file size, downloads and server work. A chat app with frequent reads has a different pattern from a small appointment list. Include development and production environments where needed.

Do not assume the existence of a free plan means every service runs without billing setup. Cloud Storage for Firebase requires the Blaze plan under its current requirements, even where no-cost usage allowances may apply. A billing-enabled plan does not necessarily mean the first request incurs a charge.

Consider maintenance and migration

Ask who can maintain the data model and rules. Moving providers later means more than exporting rows: authentication, files, functions and client code can also change.

RNBlocks includes a Supabase connection workflow. That is a practical reason to consider it within RNBlocks, but not evidence that Firebase is unsuitable. Choose from the app's data, team and operating requirements.

Which is easier without database experience?

Ease depends on the interface, data model and tooling you use. Start by describing the records and access rules in plain language. A managed service still needs configuration, even if an agent helps prepare it.

Does open source mean no hosting cost?

No. A software license and a managed hosting bill are separate. Self-hosting can also introduce operating and maintenance responsibilities. Compare the route you intend to use rather than treating open source as a synonym for free operations.

Can I use services from both?

Yes where the architecture supports it, but each additional provider adds setup, billing and data-handling work. Use a combination for a concrete reason, not because more integrations appear impressive.

Can I migrate later without changing the app?

Usually some client and backend work is required. Data models, authentication, file references and access rules can differ. Plan a migration around complete tasks and existing accounts, not only a file export.

A useful RNBlocks starting point

Define one private record, such as a saved place, and connect an appropriate Supabase test project. Verify creating, reopening and deleting it with two accounts. That small exercise tests the real account-and-data behavior before you expand to team roles, file uploads or an entire production database.

Test the required client

A provider example may use a different SDK from your app. Confirm the actual library, supported platform and configuration in the project. This matters for authentication redirects, file handling and offline behavior. A feature working in a web tutorial is helpful evidence about that example, not automatic proof of the same behavior in your installed React Native app.

Questions people also ask

Can I switch later?

Yes, but moving data and access rules takes work. Choose based on how your data is shaped.

Which is cheaper?

Both have free tiers. Costs grow with usage in different ways, so estimate with your expected users.

Build it with RNBlocks

RNBlocks includes a Supabase connection workflow for accounts and saved data. Start with one private task, review the proposed setup and test it with two accounts. That gives you a concrete way to build the app while learning how its data should behave.
