Does My App Need a Privacy Policy?

Why both app stores require a privacy policy, what it should cover, and how it relates to App Privacy and Data safety forms.

Does my app need a privacy policy?

Yes. Both the App Store and Google Play require a privacy policy URL for apps, and you also answer separate privacy questions in each store: App Privacy on Apple and the Data safety form on Google Play. Your policy and those answers must match what your app actually does.

Privacy and support information belong in the release checklist.

What the policy should cover

  • What data you collect (email, location, photos, usage).
  • Why you collect it and how you use it.
  • Which third parties receive it (analytics, AI providers, payment providers).
  • How long you keep it and how people can delete it.
  • How to contact you.

Store forms

Google Play Data safety Required for closed, open and production tracks

Common mistakes

  • A template policy that does not match the app.
  • Forgetting third-party services such as AI or analytics.
  • A policy URL that returns an error.

This article is general information, not legal advice. For complex data use, consult a professional.

Inventory data before writing the policy

Start with what the app actually handles. Include account details, uploaded files, location, analytics, crash diagnostics, payment information and messages sent to AI providers. A service collecting information on your behalf can matter even when you never open its dashboard.

For each category, note why it is needed, where it goes, who can access it and how long it remains. That inventory makes both the policy and store declarations less guesswork.

A small practical example

A recipe app may store email addresses for accounts, favorite recipes in a database and ingredient prompts with an AI service. If it reads recipes aloud, text may also be sent to a speech provider.

A generic policy saying 'we do not share any data' may be inaccurate for that app. Explain the actual service use in language a person can understand. Avoid copying another app's promises about retention or encryption without checking your own setup.

Policy, permission and store form are separate

Item Purpose
Privacy policy Explain the app's data practices
In-app disclosure Explain a relevant use at the right moment
System permission Let the operating system control protected access
Store privacy answers Describe data handling in the store's required categories

Completing one does not automatically satisfy the others. A camera permission does not by itself explain uploading the photo to an external service.

Make the policy accessible

Use a stable public page that works without login or an access request. Test it in a private browser session and on a phone. Google Play's policy requirements include specific presentation conditions; a restricted document or unsuitable file format may not meet them.

Name the app or responsible developer so readers can connect the policy to the listing. Provide a working contact route.

Review after meaningful changes

Adding analytics, AI chat, advertising or social features can change the data picture. Update the inventory, the policy and the relevant store answers together.

Account deletion also needs an operational process. Decide what is erased, what must be retained and how you communicate exceptions. Do not promise instant deletion of every backup unless you can deliver it.

Know when the situation needs specialist advice

Children's products, health information, financial data and multi-country operations can raise additional requirements. A generator can help draft wording, but it cannot determine every obligation from an app name.

Use a draft as a starting point for the facts you have checked. The useful outcome is a policy that describes the real app and a product that follows it.

Does collecting no personal data remove the store requirement?

Do not assume so. The stores require privacy information under their own policies, including explaining an app that does not collect data. Verify what embedded services actually do before making that claim.

Is the policy the same as terms of service?

No. The policy explains data practices. Terms address the conditions of using the product. Some apps need both, but one document does not automatically replace the other.

Can an AI agent draft the policy?

It can help organize a draft from accurate inputs. You must still verify the app's services, retention and contact process. An agent cannot discover every legal obligation from a brief description.

What happens when I add an SDK?

Review the information it accesses, sends and retains. Update the data inventory and affected disclosures. Test the configured behavior instead of relying only on a default template.

What should I do before submission?

Open the policy page without being signed in, check it on a phone and verify the contact information. Compare it with the actual app and store answers. If the product handles sensitive or regulated information, get appropriate advice for that situation. Keep the article's practical checklist separate from any promise that a generic template guarantees legal compliance.

Questions people also ask

Can I use a privacy policy generator?

Generators are a starting point, but edit the result to match your app and the services it uses.

Where do I host the policy?

Use a stable public page meeting the store's policy requirements. It must be accessible without sign-in or a permission request; check format and accessibility rather than assuming every hosted document qualifies.
